Katy Perry: “Woman’s World”

GENRE: Pop/R&B
LABEL: Capitol
REVIEWED: July 12, 2024

Katy Perry’s latest single, “Woman’s World,” is a perplexing attempt at a comeback that falls flat on every level. Instead of embracing the campy charm her fans have come to expect, Perry’s effort here is simply dispiriting.

Katy Perry has always been the ultimate performer, throwing herself into every eccentricity with unwavering commitment. Whether she’s singing in Simlish or engaging with a giant toilet during her Vegas residency, she brings her all. But this devotion can also highlight her shortcomings, particularly when she doesn’t fully invest in her material. Take her reggae song about the perils of technology: an example of wasted potential, with lines like “trouble” and “bubble” feeling misplaced.

Perry’s attempt at political commentary with “Woman’s World” feels as if she’s going through the motions. The song’s attempt at empowerment comes off as hollow, especially when delivered with a patronizing tone. The track’s pulsating synths and over-the-top chorus are reminiscent of Lady Gaga’s “Stupid Love,” but while Gaga’s comeback was a triumph thanks to its bold, self-aware excess, Perry’s effort lacks that crucial self-awareness.

Adding to the song’s problems is its association with Dr. Luke, who co-wrote and co-produced the track. Dr. Luke has been linked to serious allegations of sexual assault and emotional abuse, a fact that casts a shadow over Perry’s message of female empowerment. If Perry was willing to accept the negative press that comes with collaborating with someone accused of such actions, one might expect the song to be a standout hit. Instead, “Woman’s World” is tepid and uninspired.

In summary, “Woman’s World” is a disappointing misstep for Perry. Despite her usual commitment, this track feels like an ill-conceived attempt at reinvention, missing both the mark and its chance at meaningful impact.
